Last weekend's RCOD mini-series belonged to Karen Aylen and everybody involved in the Sunday morning learn to sail programme. Karen, who lives locally, had taken part in three of the sessions and Steve Rands, who had been her tutor, encouraged Karen to take part in her first race last Saturday. Needless to say, she enjoyed the day enormously and helped team Cormorant (helmed by Steve) to a first in the third race. Hopefully Karen will be back for more next season but the broader point being made is, the Sunday series is attracting new blood into the club and the programme is working.
As for the racing, three boats entered the final fourth race on equal points. It should have been a cliff hanger but in the end it wasn't. Corpo Santo, ably crewed by Rosemary Archer and Trudi Churchward, was the only boat not to be over the line and that gave her a useful head start which she kept throughout to emerge as overall winner... Edwin Buckley and Team Phoebe, set the course across the river up by Holliwell and a big thanks to them all for giving up their Saturday morning. There is a theme here and it should make many of us feel guilty. It is the willingness of many members to give their time that makes the RCYC tick and long may it continue. Bravo.
