The Official Opening of the New Pontoon

»«Friday 22nd April 2011

The date for this event was chosen as part of the Easter Weekend when we might expect a good number of members to be present with no thoughts of echoing the beautiful sunny day of the opening of the previous pontoon. Out of the question, we thought. How wrong we were - it was a spring day of such perfection, sunny and still, that it will always be remembered...

So the official party progressed to the pontoon for the opening ceremony, Bobby armed with his scissors. It was only then it became apparent that the new design had not been chosen with opening ceremonies in mind - the piles of the old pontoon had marched along its length in matching pairs whereas this pontoon had its piles arranged only on its eastern edge...

How to arrange the ribbon? Some quick thinking was required and thus it was that Annie, being the most slender, held one of the ribbon ends in graceful style, whilst the other was fixed to a suitable pile.

The Commodore spoke of this momentous occasion and passed the microphone to Bobby. He admitted that although he had reached an advanced age he had yet to be invited to open anything or cut any ribbon so was grateful to be able to include that in any future CV. He also expressed the wish that he would do it well enough in case he should be called to account by his great friend the late Allan Munro!

The ribbon was cut, the assembled crowds, members and distinguished guests, cheered mightily and Sue Law took the pictures. Everyone retired back to the balcony to continue the celebrations and enjoy the sunshine. A Perfect Day...
