Roger Receives the Jester Medal

»«Friday 26th March 2010

On March 26th Roger attended the Awards Ceremony of the Ocean Cruising Club at the Royal Thames Yacht Club to receive the Jester Medal which was awarded to him by the unanimous decision of the Awards Committee, for “an outstanding contribution to the art of single-handed sailing”.

He was persuaded to write this report.

"It was a great honour to be invited to the AGM and Annual Dinner of the Ocean Cruising Club, and to be awarded the Jester Medal. The Medal was presented by Mary Barton, widow of Humphrey Barton, and Admiral of the Ocean Cruising Club. It was the second time we had met this year - I had a long chat with her at Mike Richey's funeral in January. Other award winners included Dee Caffari, first woman to circumnavigate singlehanded in both directions, and Mike Perham, who recently became the world's youngest singlehanded circumnavigator. Needless to say, little old Mingming and I felt somewhat out of our depth in such exalted company, and our voyages somewhat meagre by comparison. However it was very gratifying to have our efforts recognised."
